I am proof that you can hold down a job and have an apprenticeship. I work 45 hours a week remodeling homes for a couple property investors/house flippers. What got me in the door with my mentor was my artwork. I had a professional portfolio that had a little bit of everything in it and I made sure it was all material that I was truly proud of. I went there, got tattooed a lot, made friends, and asked if he would critique my portfolio. They weren't even looking for an apprentice, he took me on because he said he saw real potential. What I'm saying is that if your artwork is good enough, somebody will work out a deal with you. I work at the shop about 30 hours a week. I've been at it since last October and I've just been given the go-ahead to start tattooing friends and family. You get out of it what you put into it. If you work really hard and pay attention you'll fly through the process.
PS: Tattoo schools aren't worth a damn. There is no selection process. If you have money you can learn regardless of whether or not you have any talent. There is no guarantee of getting hired anywhere afterwords. Plus there is that old saying "Those that cannot do, teach." I hope this info helped a bit.
PPS: If you have the drive and talent someone will take you under their wing. If nobody does, maybe it's not meant to be.
